In a previous article we demonstrated with functional examples how you can engage your website audience with visually strong maps and markers that are not only attractive, but also convey useful information. Maps with eye-catching markers capture the visitor’s interest and entice them to interact more with your site. This may be more so when you add a bit of movement too. So before you dismiss animated emoji as a frivolous waste of time, realise that when a user spends a few extra seconds looking at them after they’ve found your web page through a search engine, this increases dwell time and hence improves your SEO position.

The earlier article provided some practical examples of how to create fun and captivating markers in Leaflet. However we implemented this at the coding level (JavaScript, HTML, CSS). That’s great if you’re a programmer and you have low-level access to the website’s code.

Most website builders though, do not handcraft maps this way. Instead they rely on the UI of a CMS (like Drupal) to do the heavy lifting for them.
